Ravichandran Ashwin has sparked debate over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The former India spinner said the franchise should consider appointing Suryakumar Yadav as captain instead of Hardik Pandya. Ashwin said making Suryakumar Yadav captain of Mumbai Indians would be a straightforward decision. He pointed out that Suryakumar currently leads India’s T20 side and recently guided the team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title. According to Ashwin, it is surprising that the franchise has not yet made him the permanent captain despite his recent success and leadership role in international cricket.

Ashwin stated that the situation becomes more complicated because Hardik Pandya is no longer part of the leadership group in India’s white ball teams.
