Ravichandran Ashwin has sparked debate over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. The former India spinner said the franchise should consider appointing Suryakumar Yadav as captain instead of Hardik Pandya. Ashwin shared his views on his YouTube channel and said the current situation raises questions about the team’s leadership direction before the new season begins.

Ashwin said making Suryakumar Yadav captain of Mumbai Indians would be a straightforward decision. He pointed out that Suryakumar currently leads India’s T20 side and recently guided the team to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title. According to Ashwin, it is surprising that the franchise has not yet made him the permanent captain despite his recent success and leadership role in international cricket.

The veteran spinner explained that Suryakumar’s leadership credentials and form make him a natural choice for the role. Ashwin stated that the situation becomes more complicated because Hardik Pandya is no longer part of the leadership group in India’s white ball teams. This contrast, he said, creates uncertainty for fans and observers about who should lead the team moving forward.

At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged that Hardik Pandya has strong captaincy credentials. He reminded fans that Pandya led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season and guided the side to the final in the following year. Ashwin said those achievements prove that Pandya has the ability and experience to lead a franchise successfully.

Ashwin also highlighted the challenges Pandya faced after taking over the Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2024. The leadership change triggered intense scrutiny and debate among fans and experts. According to Ashwin, Pandya spent much of his first season dealing with the pressure and controversies surrounding the captaincy transition.

Despite the criticism, Ashwin said Pandya can still succeed as captain if he receives proper support from the team and management. He emphasized that removing external pressure could help Pandya use the squad more effectively and focus on performance. Ashwin added that a strong dressing room environment will be crucial for the team’s success.
