In South Africa, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded after Gabriel Batista went missing in severe floodwaters near the Komati River. Authorities suspected early that a crocodile attack might be involved due to the region’s dangerous wildlife presence. Using drones and helicopters, rescue teams tracked a massive crocodile that appeared bloated and unusually inactive near the riverbank. Its strange behavior raised strong suspicions that it had recently consumed large prey, prompting officials to capture the animal for further investigation.

High-Risk Operation to Capture Suspected Crocodile
During a high-risk operation, Captain Johan Potgieter and his team carefully secured the crocodile using aerial support. He described the mission as extremely dangerous, with nearby crocodiles increasing the tension. The team successfully airlifted the reptile to a secure location, where experts conducted a detailed examination under controlled conditions. The dissection revealed shocking findings, including human remains such as severed arms, rib fragments, and pieces of flesh. A ring found on one finger is believed to belong to Batista, though forensic tests are still ongoing for confirmation.
Investigators also discovered at least six pairs of shoes inside the crocodile, none of which have been linked to the missing man so far. Authorities are now expanding the investigation to determine whether the additional items could be connected to other missing persons in the area. Officials have not yet confirmed whether Batista drowned before the attack or was killed by the crocodile. The incident highlights the serious risks posed by wildlife in flood-affected regions and has prompted warnings for residents to stay cautious near dangerous river zones.
