    Wayanad

A powerful landslide struck the Kalladi area near Meppady in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday morning. The incident hit an under-construction tunnel project and trapped several workers beneath heavy mud and debris. Officials confirmed two deaths while rescue teams continued searching for seven missing workers. Authorities shifted several injured workers to nearby hospitals for immediate medical treatment and observation. The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert after intense rainfall affected Wayanad and surrounding districts. Officials warned residents about possible landslides and flash floods because continuous rain weakened vulnerable hill slopes. Rescue teams quickly reached the affected location with heavy equipment and emergency response vehicles. Local authorities coordinated relief operations while monitoring weather conditions across the district. Officials urged residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone areas until weather conditions improved significantly.

Landslide Hits Wayanad Tunnel Project, Leaving Workers Trapped

The trapped workers were employed on a tunnel road project connecting Wayanad and Malappuram districts. Rescue personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, Fire and Rescue Services, police, and Forest Department joined coordinated operations immediately. Local volunteers also assisted officials by clearing debris and supporting emergency teams throughout the rescue mission. Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan confirmed two fatalities and assured uninterrupted medical treatment for injured workers. Authorities transferred rescued workers to Meppadi WIMS Hospital for specialized care and continuous observation. Officials established a relief camp at Chulikka Government LP School for displaced families. District authorities evacuated nearby residents after continuous rainfall increased landslide risks around the construction site. Rescue teams continued clearing blocked roads to reach inaccessible areas and locate the remaining missing workers safely and quickly.

Heavy rainfall intensified across Wayanad after stronger westerly winds reached Kerala during the previous night. The India Meteorological Department reported extremely heavy rainfall in Wayanad and neighboring Kozhikode district. Authorities issued red alerts for Wayanad and Kozhikode while announcing orange alerts for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. Meteorologists explained that a red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204 millimeters within twenty-four hours. They stated that orange alerts represent rainfall between 115 and 204 millimeters during the same period. Officials advised residents to avoid rivers, steep slopes, and flood-prone regions until weather conditions stabilized. Emergency teams remained on standby across affected districts to respond quickly to additional incidents. Authorities continuously monitored rainfall patterns and coordinated preventive measures with local disaster management officials throughout the day.

Red Alert Issued After Heavy Rain Batters Wayanad

Kerala Agriculture Minister T. Siddique described the landslide as a preventable disaster linked to construction practices. He alleged that unscientific dumping of soil and mud during tunnel construction contributed significantly to slope instability. The minister stated officials had previously raised concerns during project review meetings with responsible authorities. He claimed corrective measures were not implemented despite repeated warnings regarding unsafe dumping practices. Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan also criticized the contractor for allegedly ignoring earlier instructions to remove accumulated soil. According to the chief minister, district authorities issued removal orders before the landslide occurred. Officials announced an investigation to determine whether negligence contributed to the deadly incident. Authorities promised strict action if investigators established violations of safety regulations or administrative directions during construction.

CCTV footage captured dramatic moments as massive debris rushed down hillsides and engulfed the tunnel project site. The landslide swept away roads, damaged vehicles, and forced workers and residents to flee immediately. Emergency responders continued searching dangerous terrain despite persistent rainfall and unstable ground conditions. The Kerala government reviewed the situation through emergency meetings and deployed senior ministers to Wayanad. Officials coordinated rescue operations with district authorities to accelerate relief efforts and protect nearby communities. Hospitals remained prepared to treat additional victims as rescue teams searched for missing workers. Authorities requested public cooperation and urged citizens to follow official advisories during continuing heavy rainfall. Rescue operations continued late into the day while officials assessed damage and monitored weather developments across the affected region.
