The state BJP has suspended around 25 activists over alleged misconduct. It has also issued show-cause notices to more than 300 workers. The allegations include extortion, corruption and anti-party activities. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya has warned leaders against using the party name for illegal activities. He said the party would take strict action against anyone involved.

Several complaints have emerged from different parts of West Bengal. These include Kolkata, South 24-Parganas, Hooghly and Birbhum. In Jamuria, police arrested BJP leader Rakesh Maji over an alleged extortion case. In another case, a promoter in South Dum Dum alleged that extortionists demanded Rs 5 lakh. The accused allegedly had links with the BJP after leaving the TMC.

The RSS has also expressed concern over allegations involving extortion and corruption. Meanwhile, BJP Bengal in-charge Sunil Bansal held key organisational meetings in Kolkata. Leaders discussed party discipline, law and order and upcoming elections. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has also launched four toll-free helplines. People can report complaints about illegal tolls, syndicates, extortion and illegal liquor.

Another concern involves former TMC leaders joining the BJP. Several TMC workers have entered the BJP fold across the state. Some prominent former TMC leaders have also joined the party. Their entry has created resentment among some BJP members. The Bengal BJP now faces pressure to prove that it can maintain strict discipline. Its response to the extortion allegations will shape its image in the state.
