Mexican security authorities reported that cartel members created more than 250 flaming roadblocks in at least 20 states on Sunday, bringing major transport routes to a standstill and forcing many residents to remain inside their homes as thick smoke spread across several cities in Mexico. The coordinated disruption followed confirmed reports that notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, had died, triggering what officials described as a large-scale retaliatory response by organised crime groups.

Armed men set vehicles on fire, blocked highways, and caused panic near a major airport, creating scenes of fear and confusion. Authorities said the attacks appeared carefully planned and executed almost simultaneously in multiple regions, showing the operational reach of the criminal network. Security forces immediately increased patrols, monitored key highways, and issued public safety advisories while emergency teams worked to clear the burning barricades and restore movement.

Officials confirmed that Oseguera, aged 60, led the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel for years and remained one of the most wanted figures in the country. According to the defence ministry, he died in custody after sustaining injuries during a Mexican special forces operation conducted in the Pacific coastal town of Tapalpa in Jalisco state. Security personnel captured him during the raid, but he later succumbed to his wounds.

Authorities including the United States Department of State and Embassy of Canada in Mexico asked their citizens to stay indoors in affected regions, while several schools shut classes as forces tried to restore order in Mexico. The Embassy of India in Mexico also advised Indians to avoid crowds and limit travel. Officials said the operation that killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes marked one of the country’s biggest anti-drug actions, though the rapid violent backlash highlighted the cartel’s strong network.
