The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the food licences of five prominent Mumbai clubs after a special inspection drive uncovered serious food safety and hygiene violations. During the inspections, officials discovered cockroach infestations, poor sanitation, unsafe food storage, improper food handling practices, and several licensing lapses. The FDA stated that these violations could pose serious health risks to consumers. Besides suspending the licences, the department ordered one food establishment to stop operations immediately for operating without a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence, while another establishment received an improvement notice to correct the identified deficiencies.

FDA Suspends Licences of Five Mumbai Clubs

The FDA suspended the food licences of The Cricket Club of India, RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana, MIG Cricket Club in Bandra East, and The Willingdon Sports Club. At The Cricket Club of India, inspectors found live cockroaches, flies, clogged drains, mouldy vegetables, expired food items, and poor waste management practices. They also observed improper segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation areas, inadequate food labelling, and failure to follow the First In, First Out (FIFO) and First Expired, First Out (FEFO) inventory systems. Dirty food-contact equipment and stagnant water further highlighted poor hygiene standards.

Inspectors identified several food safety violations at RK Juhu Gymkhana, including poor personal hygiene, damaged infrastructure, improper food storage temperatures, and outdated cleaning schedules. They reported that food handlers prepared food without wearing gloves, caps, or aprons. The inspection team also found rusted kitchen equipment, blocked drainage systems, insect entry points, and missing food safety audit records. At another club, officials discovered an unauthorised catering operator functioning without a valid FSSAI licence. They also found cockroach infestations, spider webs, uncertified food packaging materials, and missing health and vaccination records for food handlers.

Inspections Reveal Serious Food Safety Violations

The FDA also detected multiple violations at The Willingdon Sports Club. Inspectors found damaged ceilings, slippery floors, poor temperature monitoring systems, outdated food testing records, and poorly maintained drainage systems. They observed that the club failed to maintain proper food labelling, inventory management practices, and food handler hygiene standards. Separately, the department ordered Goregaon Sports Club in Malad West to stop all food business operations after inspectors confirmed that it was operating without the required FSSAI registration or licence. Officials directed the club to obtain all mandatory approvals before restarting its food services.

The enforcement action forms part of Maharashtra’s ongoing food safety campaign targeting restaurants, hotels, clubs, and catering establishments across the state. The FDA continues to conduct surprise inspections to ensure food businesses comply with food safety regulations and maintain proper hygiene standards. Authorities warned that repeated violations could result in licence suspension, financial penalties, or further legal action. The department also urged food business operators to follow all food safety guidelines and encouraged consumers to report unhygienic practices to help protect public health.
