The West Bengal SIR has created uncertainty for thousands of voters. Around 36.6 lakh cases remained pending by June. These cases reached 19 tribunals over alleged logical discrepancies. However, many excluded voters still do not know what comes next. The Election Commission has also not shared complete details.
Several voters now face serious concerns after tribunal decisions. Sabia Khatun and her father Samsul Alam lost their names from the voter list. Their family submitted school certificates and other documents. Yet, the tribunal ruled against them. The Calcutta High Court later ordered another review of Samsul’s case. Sabia still awaits a hearing.

Manjura Begum from Hooghly also lost her voter status. She had voted earlier and submitted documents during the SIR process. Her family says officials made errors in her notice. Her lawyer also questioned the tribunal process. Manjura has now approached the Calcutta High Court for relief.
Meanwhile, many excluded voters fear losing access to government welfare schemes. State leaders have warned about possible restrictions on benefits. The Election Commission says affected people can apply again as new voters. However, this option offers little comfort to families already facing legal uncertainty. Many also worry about future documentation and official services.
The West Bengal SIR has therefore created a difficult situation for affected voters. They want clear reasons for their exclusion and a fair chance to appeal. Many cannot afford lengthy court battles. Until authorities provide clear answers, uncertainty will continue for thousands of families. The issue is now also before the Supreme Court.
