Violence inside Sri Lanka’s Negombo Prison turned deadly after rival groups of inmates clashed over alleged drug trafficking activities. Officials confirmed that the death toll has risen to 25, while more than 100 prisoners suffered injuries. The unrest began on Sunday and escalated again on Monday when rioting inmates reportedly seized prison firearms. Authorities immediately deployed additional security personnel to bring the situation under control and prevent further violence inside the overcrowded prison.
Drug Trafficking Dispute Sparks Deadly Violence Inside Negombo Prison
Preliminary investigations indicate that the clash broke out between inmates who allegedly supported drug trafficking inside the prison and another group that opposed such activities. The confrontation quickly intensified, leading to widespread violence across the prison complex. In response, the Police Special Task Force (STF) and riot control units tightened security around the facility. Officials also transferred three inmates to the Pallansena Prison Camp to reduce tensions and restore order.
The Sri Lankan Prisons Department launched a special investigation into the incident. Media Spokesman AC Gajanayake said the Commissioner General of Prisons formed a dedicated inquiry team to determine the exact cause of the violence. Police have also opened a separate investigation to identify those responsible for the deadly clashes. Authorities expect both investigations to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has sought a detailed report on the prison violence and ordered officials to examine every aspect of the incident. A magisterial inquiry has already taken place as part of the legal process. The government has assured the public that it will take strict action against anyone found responsible for the unrest. Officials continue to monitor the prison closely while maintaining heightened security.
Prison violence has occurred before in Sri Lanka. In 2012, a major gun battle at the country’s largest prison claimed at least 27 lives after security personnel conducted a search for illegal drugs and mobile phones. That incident exposed serious security concerns within the prison system. The latest Negombo Prison clash has once again highlighted the challenges authorities face in controlling criminal activities and maintaining order inside correctional facilities.
