The first round of high-stakes US-Iran talks in Switzerland took a dramatic turn on Sunday when the Iranian delegation briefly walked out of the venue after objecting to President Donald Trump’s latest warning against Tehran. The incident unfolded at the Burgenstock resort and quickly drew international attention as cameras captured the tense diplomatic moment.

A viral video showed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaking briefly with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before leading the Iranian delegation out of the room. Sharif appeared surprised by the sudden move and later gestured toward Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. Nearby, US Vice President JD Vance watched the scene before approaching the Pakistani delegation.

The walkout occurred during negotiations held under the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which brought together officials from Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar. Iranian officials had already rejected a planned joint photo opportunity with the American delegation, calling it a US “media show.” Tensions escalated further after Trump warned Tehran of possible military action if it failed to curb Hezbollah’s activities in Lebanon.

Tense moment marks opening round of US-Iran talks

Iranian media linked the delegation’s brief exit to both the proposed photo-op and Trump’s remarks. According to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, Tehran formally conveyed its objections to Washington and reviewed its response to what it described as American threats. Despite the visible disagreement, negotiators returned to the table and continued discussions behind closed doors.

The talks lasted around 80 minutes and focused on sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian funds and the implementation of commitments under the Islamabad MoU. Iranian officials reported limited progress, including movement on releasing frozen assets with Qatari participation and finalising a draft for waivers on Iranian oil sanctions. Although the walkout highlighted the fragile nature of the negotiations, both sides kept the dialogue alive, signalling their commitment to pursuing a broader understanding.
