A Russian oil tanker has reached waters near Cuba, marking the first such delivery since January. This follows comments by U.S. President Donald Trump indicating that he does not oppose countries like Russia sending supplies to the island. His statement suggests a possible easing of earlier strict restrictions. The move has drawn attention as it may signal a shift in U.S. policy toward Cuba.
The tanker is carrying around 100,000 tonnes of crude oil as a “humanitarian shipment.” This supply is expected to provide short-term relief to Cuba, which has been facing severe fuel shortages. The country has struggled to maintain electricity and basic services due to the crisis. The arrival of this oil could temporarily stabilize the situation.
Previously, the U.S. had imposed a de facto oil blockade on Cuba, limiting fuel imports. This action worsened the island’s already fragile economic condition. Shortages of fuel led to nationwide blackouts and disruptions in daily life. Essential sectors like healthcare were also heavily affected.

Russian Oil Shipment Reaches Cuba Amid Signs of Easing US Blockade
Cuba’s crisis deepened after losing support from Venezuela, which had been supplying oil at favorable terms. With reduced fuel availability, hospitals and emergency services began to struggle. The World Health Organization also warned about the impact on critical care. The ongoing shortages have made recovery more difficult for the country.
Trump’s recent remarks suggest a possible softening of the blockade, though it is unclear if it is permanent. The tanker is expected to unload its cargo soon, offering temporary relief. However, political tensions between the U.S. and Cuba remain high. Long-term solutions are still uncertain as both sides hold firm positions.
