The collision occurred near Bilaspur, about 115 kilometers northeast of Raipur, late Tuesday evening, officials reported. Officials confirmed the train driver died while his co-pilot, a woman, remains critically injured. About twenty passengers sustained injuries and received treatment at nearby hospitals, according to local authorities. Train services resumed through the accident site after crews cleared debris and restored the track. Indian Railways began an investigation into the crash and promised compensation for victims’ families. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed condolences and assured full assistance to the affected families. Train collisions occur frequently in India’s vast and busy railway network, officials acknowledged Wednesday morning.

More than twelve million passengers travel daily across the country’s 64,000-kilometer rail system, authorities noted. Despite ongoing modernization, experts blame human error and outdated signaling for frequent train accidents nationwide. India continues to face challenges ensuring passenger safety despite major investments in railway infrastructure upgrades. A 2023 crash in eastern India killed over 280 people, highlighting persistent safety concerns across railways.
