A routine inspection of Mumbai’s waterlogged areas took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when a BMC worker fell into an open drain during Mayor Ritu Tawde’s visit to Matunga. The Mayor, along with civic officials and police personnel, was reviewing drainage conditions following heavy rainfall across the city when the incident occurred.
The worker lost balance while working near the drain and suddenly plunged into the open channel in full view of officials. The incident, captured on camera, briefly sparked panic at the inspection site as authorities rushed to assess the situation.

Police personnel and civic staff immediately launched a rescue operation and safely pulled the worker out. The worker escaped serious injury, and officials quickly restored order at the location.
Just moments before the incident, Mayor Tawde had highlighted the BMC’s monsoon preparedness, stating that pumping stations were operational, roads were clean and drainage infrastructure was functioning efficiently. She also said the civic body had completed most of its pre-monsoon work to minimise inconvenience for residents.
The incident came amid widespread waterlogging caused by heavy overnight rainfall across Mumbai. Several low-lying areas reported flooding, traffic disruptions and delays in suburban train services, prompting renewed calls for more effective drain-cleaning and flood-prevention measures
