    Project Meghalaya

The Chennai Police have stepped up their investigation into the alleged “Project Meghalaya” conspiracy, which reportedly aimed to destabilise the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. Authorities have arrested nine people in connection with the case so far. According to investigators, nearly 15 TVK MLAs were allegedly offered ₹35 crore each to switch loyalty. Police are continuing to gather evidence and identify everyone linked to the alleged operation. The case has triggered a major political controversy in Tamil Nadu.

Police Probe Alleged Plot to Influence TVK Legislators

The investigation began after TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja from Uthangarai filed a formal complaint with the police. He alleged that YouTuber Thirunavukkarasu, who runs the opinion polling platform IDPS, along with several others, offered him ₹35 crore to vote against the party whip in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Elaiyaraja claimed that similar attempts were made to persuade other TVK legislators. He also alleged that he and his family received threats after refusing the offer. Police later linked these claims to an operation allegedly codenamed “Project Meghalaya.”

As part of the probe, Chennai Police questioned senior television journalist Vijayan from the regional news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai on July 15 and 16. Investigators reportedly found digital evidence indicating communication between the journalist and the main accused. Police seized his mobile phone for forensic examination to determine whether the conversations were connected to the alleged conspiracy. Officials said the device would help verify the nature of the exchanges. The investigation remains ongoing.

    Journalist Questioned as Investigation Expands

The Chennai Press Club criticised the police action, alleging that the journalist was questioned late into the night and that his phone was seized without proper procedure. The organisation also claimed that he was summoned again the following day. However, Chennai Police rejected these allegations and maintained that every step of the investigation followed legal procedures. Officials said the questioning formed part of a routine investigation based on available evidence. They insisted that due process had been followed throughout.

Meanwhile, investigators are also examining reports of the possible involvement of certain DMK leaders in the alleged conspiracy. The DMK has strongly denied all accusations, describing them as politically motivated and intended to create a false narrative. Party leaders said they would respond through appropriate legal channels if required. Police are now focusing on identifying the wider network behind the alleged operation and tracing the source of funds reportedly used to influence legislators. The investigation continues under close public and political scrutiny.
