The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has introduced two new master’s programmes in design and emerging technologies. The institute will offer a Master of Design (MDes) and a Master of Technology (MTech) in Maritime Engineering and will begin admissions from the upcoming academic year. The programmes aim to equip students with interdisciplinary skills aligned with evolving industry demands, while officials say the courses foster innovation, research, and practical expertise in emerging fields.
The Master’s in Design programme combines design thinking with engineering, technology, and social sciences to enhance systems thinking and collaborative problem-solving for real-world challenges. The Master of Technology in Maritime Engineering focuses on port and ocean infrastructure, logistics, and regulatory frameworks. The institute states that the programme also addresses gaps in maritime education, particularly in Gujarat, which is known for its extensive port activity and cargo traffic.

Rajat Moona said the institute is expanding beyond traditional disciplines and focusing on applying knowledge in complex, real-world contexts. He noted that the new programmes in design and maritime engineering reflect an interdisciplinary, systems-driven approach to education. He added that the MDes programme blends creativity with engineering and social perspectives, while the MTech in Maritime Engineering aligns with India’s economic priorities by strengthening port-led development and logistics, with a focus on Gujarat’s extensive coastline.
The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has strengthened its academic offerings through collaborations with leading institutions across India. The institute runs several dual-degree programmes in partnership with organisations such as the Indian Institute of Science, Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology Surat, National Institute of Technology Agartala, and the Space Applications Centre, according to an official statement. These collaborations promote academic exchange, joint research, and interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students.
