Gautam Gambhir’s tough call on Kohli, Rohit

    Gautam

Being the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team is among the toughest jobs in the sport, but Gautam Gambhir has made his mark with a blunt and uncompromising style since taking charge in July 2024; over a year later, amid criticism of India’s declining Test performances, the dip in red-ball form of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has pushed the team management toward difficult decisions, signalling a transition phase in Indian cricket.

The transition extended to ODIs, where the commitment of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma came under scrutiny, with both asked to prove their intent for the 2027 World Cup by playing domestic cricket—a move that sparked debate; despite criticism, Gautam Gambhir remained firm, with Munaf Patel backing him, saying his bold approach and willingness to take tough calls are crucial for the team, even if it means making unpopular decisions.

Gautam Gambhir’s tough calls stir debate

Backing Gautam Gambhir, Munaf Patel said the coach’s honesty and strict approach are vital, warning that removing him could make managing players difficult, as he is unafraid to take bold calls; earlier reports had suggested Gambhir pushed to drop Rohit Sharma during the Sydney Test, though the decision was later clarified as Rohit’s own, while subsequent reports of tensions involving Rohit and Virat Kohli, along with uncertainty over their role in the 2027 World Cup plans under Gambhir and selector Ajit Agarkar, hinted at growing unease within the setup.

Emphasising the challenges of man-management, Munaf Patel highlighted how difficult it is to take firm calls involving stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, noting that Gautam Gambhir risks making enemies in the process, yet despite the criticism, he has delivered success in white-ball cricket, leading India to titles in the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup, with the trio set to reunite during the upcoming England tour for an ODI series.
