The Government of India confirmed that the country currently holds around 60 days of fuel stock and firmly dismissed reports of petrol, diesel, or LPG shortages as a “deliberate misinformation campaign” aimed at triggering panic buying.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that all petrol pumps across the country remain fully stocked and are operating normally. Authorities have not imposed any rationing of petrol or diesel. In an official statement, the Ministry said India has structurally secured domestic fuel availability and continues to export refined petroleum products to more than 150 countries. As the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, India maintains strong operational capacity.
“Every Indian refinery is running at over 100% utilization,” the Ministry said, adding that oil companies have already secured crude supplies for the next 60 days. “There is no supply gap,” it clarified.

India’s 60-Day Fuel Buffer Ensures Energy Stability
The government stated that India has a total crude oil and fuel stocking capacity of 74 days. At present, the actual stock cover stands at around 60 days, including crude stocks, refined product inventories, and strategic reserves stored in underground caverns. Officials emphasized that this level of supply remains intact even as the Middle East crisis enters its 27th day.
“Nearly two months of steady supply is available for every Indian citizen regardless of global developments,” the statement said. With crude procurement for the next two months already secured, the government asserted that India’s energy security remains stable for the foreseeable future.
The Ministry also rejected claims that reserves are critically low. “Any representation that India’s reserves are depleted or insufficient should be dismissed,” it said.
Despite tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, crude supply lines remain stable. Higher volumes from alternative sources have offset any potential disruption. Indian refiners continue to operate above full capacity, ensuring uninterrupted fuel production.
The government also confirmed that LPG supplies remain sufficient. Authorities have increased domestic production and reduced import dependence. Additionally, companies have secured extra cargoes from multiple countries to maintain steady availability.
Warning against false narratives, the government said misleading social media posts and fabricated claims about fuel shortages are creating unnecessary panic. Officials stated that authorities will take strict action against those spreading misinformation.
