Andhra Pradesh Assembly and Parliament Approve Amaravati Capital Move

Amaravati moved closer to becoming Andhra Pradesh’s sole capital after a series of legislative developments. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, had earlier declared Hyderabad as the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a period of up to ten years following the creation of Telangana. After that period, Hyderabad remained the capital of Telangana, while Andhra Pradesh was to establish its own new capital.

On March 28, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly passed a resolution backing Amaravati as the state’s only capital. The move cleared the way for the introduction of the Bill in Parliament.

The Lok Sabha passed the Bill on April 1, and the Rajya Sabha approved it the following day. During the debate, MPs of the YSR Congress Party staged a walkout in protest.

YSRCP MP Golla Babu Rao criticised the legislation and described it as “a drama.” He questioned the need for the Bill and said any decision on the capital should ensure justice for the people.
