Hyderabad Police have registered an FIR against a teacher and other officials of a private school after allegations emerged that a Hindu student received homework instructing the entire class to read the Kalma. The six-year-old student’s aunt filed the complaint after finding the assignment in the child’s school diary. She objected to the inclusion of compulsory religious content in the homework and questioned the school’s decision. Following the complaint, the school dismissed the teacher, while police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Juvenile Justice Act and began a detailed investigation.

Homework Assignment Sparks Controversy
Police said the incident took place on July 15, when a female teacher assigned the homework to a Grade II class of 25 students, including one Hindu student. Investigators stated that the teacher instructed every student in the class to read the Kalma as part of the assignment. After discovering the instruction, the student’s aunt immediately approached the school authorities and raised objections. She alleged that the principal described the religious lesson as compulsory for all students. She maintained that schools should offer religious instruction only to students who voluntarily choose to study it.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Charminar Zone), Khare Kiran Prabhakar, said the alleged assignment violated both the national education policy and the school’s internal rules. Police officers recorded statements from school officials, collected documentary evidence, and examined the homework records. Investigators also started reviewing whether the assignment violated regulations governing religious instruction in educational institutions. Authorities confirmed that they would continue the investigation before deciding on additional legal action against those responsible.
Hyderabad Political Leaders Demand Strict Action
The incident quickly sparked a political controversy across Telangana. Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) demanded strict action against the school management. Bandi Sanjay criticized organizations that remained silent over the controversy and called for accountability. VHP leaders also urged the government to reconsider the school’s recognition. Meanwhile, the school removed the teacher from service and assured investigators that it would fully cooperate with the ongoing probe.
The case has reignited a nationwide debate over religious instruction in schools and the importance of protecting students’ freedom of belief. Education experts and political leaders have stressed that educational institutions must follow constitutional principles, maintain religious neutrality, and respect the rights of every student. Police continue to investigate the allegations and are expected to take further action based on the evidence collected during the inquiry.
