The renewed dispute over the Lipulekh Pass route has intensified diplomatic tensions between India and Nepal recently. Nepal formally objected after India and China prepared arrangements for the 2026 Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route. The Himalayan corridor traditionally connects Indian pilgrims with the sacred Kailash Mansarovar region located inside Tibetan territory. However, Nepal argued that the route crosses disputed territory claimed under its constitutional and historical boundary definitions. The disagreement transformed a religious pilgrimage into another geopolitical flashpoint involving sovereignty, diplomacy, and historical territorial claims.

Nepal Objects to Kailash Mansarovar Route Through Lipulekh Pass

The roots of the dispute trace back to the historic Treaty of Sugauli signed during 1816 after regional conflict ended. The treaty defined Nepal’s western border along the Kali river, creating confusion regarding the river’s original source location. Nepal insists historical records identify Limpiyadhura as the true origin point of the Kali river boundary line. India rejects this interpretation and instead recognises Lipukhola, situated near Lipulekh, as the river’s actual source. These conflicting geographical interpretations significantly influence territorial ownership across the strategically important Himalayan tri-junction region today.

Nepal recently reiterated claims over Limpiyadhura, Kalapani, and Lipulekh while opposing activities conducted through disputed territories. Kathmandu formally informed both India and China that the pilgrimage route passes through land claimed under Nepali sovereignty. Officials argued that organised yatras create international perceptions favouring India’s administrative control over the contested Himalayan region. Nepal also expressed dissatisfaction because authorities allegedly excluded Kathmandu from consultations before finalising arrangements for the religious route. Domestic political pressures further strengthened Nepal’s response after constitutional amendments incorporated disputed territories within official national maps.

Historic Border Dispute Fuels Fresh India-Nepal Tension Over Pilgrimage Route

India firmly rejected Nepal’s objections and described recent territorial claims as unilateral and historically inconsistent interpretations officially. Indian authorities emphasised that pilgrims continuously travelled through the Lipulekh corridor for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since 1954. New Delhi argued that present arrangements merely continue longstanding pilgrimage practices rather than asserting any fresh territorial expansion. India also maintained that unresolved border disputes should only be addressed through structured bilateral diplomatic negotiations between governments. Officials stressed that changing historical interpretations cannot alter decades of administrative control and established regional accessibility practices.

The Lipulekh dispute now reflects broader geopolitical complexities involving India, Nepal, and China simultaneously across sensitive Himalayan territories. India considers the pass strategically important for Tibetan access and religious connectivity with sacred pilgrimage destinations. Nepal views the issue as a matter involving sovereignty, historical justice, and constitutional territorial recognition within national boundaries. China’s cooperation with India regarding pilgrimage arrangements adds another diplomatic layer surrounding already sensitive border management concerns. Consequently, infrastructure projects, trade corridors, and religious journeys continue triggering political tensions because unresolved territorial disagreements persist.
