West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday criticised the Election Commission of India after reports revealed a BJP seal on a notification issued by Kerala’s Chief Electoral Officer, an error officials later called a “clerical mistake.” Speaking in Kolkata ahead of the state elections, she questioned the poll body’s impartiality, alleged indirect bias, said the incident “proved” concerns over neutrality, and urged the Commission to act transparently, while asserting that people could clearly understand the situation as her party eyes another term in power.

In north Bengal’s Siliguri, where Banerjee headed for campaigning, BJP leader Shankar Ghosh said he would comment only after an official statement from the Election Commission of India. Banerjee, however, rejected the “clerical mistake” explanation, called on political parties to unite against what she described as authoritarian rule, urged them to rise above ideological divides to “save democracy,” and stressed that the issue concerns all citizens, not just political parties.

Mamata flags officer transfer ‘irregularities’, questions poll fairness

Mamata Banerjee alleged irregularities in the transfer of officials in West Bengal, questioned the shifting of returning officers—including one from Nandigram to Bhawanipore—ahead of her north Bengal campaign, and took an indirect swipe at opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari by suggesting political interference, while highlighting the large-scale movement of IAS and IPS officers. She raised concerns over the timing of the reshuffle, called it suspicious during the election process, and warned that such actions could affect the fairness of the polls.

Banerjee also criticised the Election Commission of India over the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal, questioned the late-night publication of a supplementary voters’ list, and alleged a lack of transparency in the process. She said the move followed her court intervention, flagged possible bias in the inclusion of names, asserted that the full picture would emerge once the complete list is public, and demanded greater clarity and accountability from the poll body.
