    Satyendar

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting its senior leader Satyendar Jain ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested Jain on Tuesday in a multi-crore sewage treatment plant (STP) tender fraud case. The timing of the arrest, just months before the Punjab polls, has triggered a political row. Jain, a former Delhi minister and AAP’s Punjab co-in charge, also linked his arrest to the upcoming election. While police escorted him to a Delhi court on Wednesday, Jain told reporters that the authorities had arrested him because of the Punjab election. AAP appointed Jain as Punjab co-in charge in March 2025, giving him a key role in the party’s preparations for the state polls.

Why Satyendar Jain’s Role Matters for AAP in Punjab

Jain has held several important positions within AAP and has worked closely with the party leadership. He served as a minister in all three AAP governments in Delhi and managed the party’s affairs in several states. AAP also gave him charge of its campaign during the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. The party, however, failed to win any of the 67 seats it contested and lost deposits across the state. AAP leaders and political observers later linked Jain’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in May 2022 to the party’s difficulties in mobilising its organisation during the campaign. Jain secured bail in October 2024. His latest arrest has now created fresh concerns for AAP because the party considers Punjab crucial to its political future.

AAP leaders have accused the BJP of following a pattern of targeting the party’s leaders before elections. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal attacked the BJP through social media posts and alleged that the ruling party had ordered Jain’s arrest. Kejriwal also claimed that authorities had fabricated the earlier case against Jain and predicted that the latest case would also fail in court. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh made a similar allegation. Singh pointed to the arrests of Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Jain and himself before the Delhi elections and argued that the BJP wanted to disrupt AAP’s campaign. He claimed that the BJP now follows the same strategy in Punjab ahead of the state elections.

Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh Target BJP Over Arrest

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also criticised the BJP over Jain’s arrest. Speaking at a press conference in Chandigarh, Mann alleged that the BJP targets AAP leaders whenever elections approach. He referred to the earlier arrests of Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh and argued that the latest action against Jain follows the same political pattern. Mann, however, acknowledged that courts must decide whether an accused person has committed any offence. AAP leaders have therefore made the timing of Jain’s arrest a central political issue ahead of the Punjab polls. The BJP faces these allegations from AAP, while the legal proceedings will determine the merits of the corruption charges against Jain.

The ACB arrested Jain in a case dating back to 2022, when he served as Delhi’s Water Minister. The Directorate of Vigilance filed the complaint and alleged that officials manipulated tender conditions and committed irregularities during the upgradation of sewage treatment plants in the Capital. Investigators have also alleged a criminal conspiracy in the tender process. Jain faces several other investigations by different agencies, including an ED money-laundering case that led to his arrest in 2022. The latest action has intensified the political battle between AAP and the BJP ahead of the Punjab elections. AAP plans to highlight the timing of the arrest during its campaign, while the investigating agencies will pursue the corruption allegations through the legal process. The Punjab election could therefore turn Jain’s arrest into another major flashpoint between the two parties.
