West Bengal Governor R N Ravi dissolved the state legislative assembly on Thursday, May 7. The move came after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s massive win in the Assembly elections and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign.
Tensions rose further after bike-borne attackers shot dead Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram of North 24 Parganas on Wednesday night. Rath worked as the personal assistant to BJP leader and CM hopeful Suvendu Adhikari.
The attackers shot Rath in the head, chest and abdomen. Doctors declared him dead after hospital staff rushed him for treatment. Authorities later shifted his body to his hometown in Purba Medinipur district.
West Bengal Police recovered the motorcycle linked to the attack. Officers took the vehicle to Madhyamgram police station for investigation, ANI reported.
The BJP won 207 of the 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal. The Trinamool Congress secured only 80 seats. The victory will help the BJP form its first government in the state. It also makes Narendra Modi the first sitting Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to lead his party to victory in West Bengal.
Despite the defeat, Mamata Banerjee refused to visit Raj Bhavan and submit her resignation. She claimed she had not lost the election. According to the Election Commission of India, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Banerjee in Bhabanipur by more than 15,000 votes.
The BJP appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the central observer for choosing the next West Bengal chief minister. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will work as co-observer.

West Bengal BJP Govt to Take Oath at Brigade Parade Grounds; PM Modi to Attend
The Bharatiya Janata Party will swear in its first government in West Bengal on May 9 at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers from BJP-ruled states will attend the ceremony, senior party leaders said on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said the swearing-in ceremony will start at 10 am. He also noted that, for the first time, a Bengal chief minister will take oath at a public venue instead of the governor’s official residence.
Additionally, Bhattacharya said the BJP will choose ministers during its legislative party meeting on May 8 at 4 pm. Senior central leaders will attend the meeting at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in New Town. Moreover, the outgoing Trinamool Congress government developed the project.
The BJP has named Amit Shah as the central observer for selecting ministers. Similarly, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will serve as co-observer.
