The government has directed Uber, Ola and other cab aggregators to remove pre-ride tipping options from their apps. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued the direction with immediate effect. Officials said passengers should not pay extra money to improve their chances of getting a cab.
Government Bans Pre-Ride Tip Requests
The order follows reports of apps showing messages such as “Advance Tip” during bookings. Some prompts suggested that paying extra could help passengers receive faster confirmation. The government said such practices could create unnecessary pressure on passengers while booking rides. Under the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, companies cannot link tips with ride acceptance or service availability. Aggregators must also remove messages suggesting that tips can reduce waiting time or influence driver allocation. Officials have asked companies to update their platforms accordingly.
However, the government has not banned tipping completely. Passengers can still voluntarily tip drivers after completing their journey. Aggregators must provide the tipping option only after the ride ends and must transfer the full tip amount to the driver. The latest order aims to make cab bookings more transparent and fair for passengers. The government has also asked aggregators to follow the 2025 guidelines across their digital platforms. Passengers can therefore decide whether to tip after their journey without facing pressure during booking.
