Delhi Metro Expands Network With Underground Route Linking Terminal 1 and Aerocity

Passengers travelling through Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will soon benefit from improved connectivity as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans a new 2.3-kilometre underground corridor between Aerocity and Terminal 1. The project aims to simplify travel within the airport and provide quicker access to different terminals. By extending the Golden Line, DMRC seeks to reduce dependence on shuttle buses and lengthy walks. The new link will offer a smoother and more convenient travel experience for airport users. Authorities expect the corridor to become an important part of Delhi’s transport infrastructure.

Delhi Metro to Link Aerocity With IGI Terminal 1

Under the project, Terminal 1 will become an interchange station connected directly to the Magenta Line. This integration will allow passengers to switch between metro lines and airport terminals without difficulty. Travellers will gain seamless access to both domestic and international flight services through the metro network. DMRC believes the upgraded station will improve passenger convenience and reduce travel-related delays. The move will also strengthen connectivity between key locations across the city and the airport.

The project will also transform Aerocity Metro Station into a major transit hub. The station will connect the Airport Express Line, the Golden Line, and the proposed Delhi-SNB-Alwar Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This integration will create a comprehensive transportation network for commuters and air travellers. Officials expect the hub to improve connectivity between Delhi, nearby regions, and the airport. The development will support growing passenger demand and encourage the use of public transportation.

New Underground Metro Corridor Planned for IGI Terminal 1

The Golden Line, part of Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion, stretches nearly 26 kilometres from Aerocity to Tughlakabad. The fully driverless corridor will include 15 stations, with most of them located underground. DMRC has already completed a significant portion of the construction work and continues to make steady progress. The line aims to strengthen transport links across South Delhi while improving access to the airport. Once operational, it will provide faster and more efficient travel options for thousands of daily commuters.

At present, passengers often rely on shuttle buses to move between airport terminals. The new underground corridor will eliminate that requirement by providing direct metro connectivity throughout the airport network. To accommodate increasing passenger traffic, DMRC plans to extend the Golden Line platform at Aerocity Station to 290 metres. Officials expect the Aerocity-Terminal 1 corridor to be completed by December 2028. After completion, the project will reduce travel time, improve accessibility, and offer seamless connectivity across all IGI Airport terminals.
